Scholarship Overview

The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program invites applications from African faculty members at colleges and universities. The recipients will be fully funded to travel to the United States to improve their learning and research skills in their respective fields of study.

The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Program promotes the development of the next generation of African scholars through their integration into international academic networks, as well as the University of Michigan's international commitment to research and teaching collaborations across diverse disciplines.

The UMAPS program has two cohorts per year, from August to December and January to May, with a single application round for both. Applicants will be able to indicate their preference for a specific cohort during the application process.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates must meet the following:

  • Be an early career faculty member who has taught in higher education for less than ten years and is currently teaching in an African college or university.
  • Be employed in a permanent position at an African university or college.
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from the head of department, dean, or vice chancellor, you must be able to demonstrate support from your home institution.
  • Be able to stay in residence for a period of five months.

Application Instructions

  • Nomination is required for applicants from countries other than Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, or Uganda. It must be completed by a U-M faculty member who is familiar with the prospective applicant's work. The nominating committee must:
    • Fill out the nomination form (for University of Michigan faculty only and access requires U-M login).
  • Submit or upload a letter of support indicating their willingness to serve as a mentor for the duration of the residency, commit to meeting on a regular basis, and, if possible, provide an office space for the prospective participant.
  • When the nomination form and letter of support are complete, a link to the application portal will be sent to the nominated applicant via email invitation
  • Applicant must:
    • Fill out the application form (this link can only be used by applicants from the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda).
    • Use the online application to upload your curriculum vitae.
    • Please submit a scholarly program/research proposal (not to exceed five pages).
    • Provide the full name and contact information for the applicant's home institution's department head, dean, or vice chancellor who will be writing their letter of support.
  • Application deadline is 15th October
